Where No Man Has Walked Before

Mount Stewart, Newtownards, Co. Down - Fascinating eighteenth-century house with nineteenth-century additions.

SPRING is one of the best times of year to enjoy the splendour of Strangford Lough, with its still waters and vibrant displays of colour provided by an array of plants and trees in bloom. Mount Stewart, the National Trust’s dazzling gem situated on the Lough, overlooks Chapel Island which you can discover on an intriguing guided walk on Sunday 11 May.

The National Trust’s Strangford Lough Wardens will guide you through a walking history of the island which can be seen from the property and the inter- tidal and maritime archaeology that lies between. Some of spring’s wildlife wonders can be observed and David Thompson, Strangford Lough Property Manager will explain the National Trust’s innovative and practical management of wildlife on the Lough.

The Chapel Island Walk provides the perfect opportunity to stretch those legs and be guided across the delightful shores of Strangford to visit a place you have always wondered about.

The walk begins at low tide at 12 noon, meeting in Mount Stewart’s visitor reception and is scheduled to return at 3pm again with low tide. The weather and sand underfoot can be unpredictable so suitable outdoor clothing and waterproof shoes/boots are essential. The cost is £15 per person (not suitable for children under 12 years). Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the shores of the island. Refreshments will be served at Mount Stewart at approximately 3pm, following the walk. Booking is essential, contact Mount Stewart reception on 028 4278 8387
