The unique traditional sound of Wales & Ireland, in all its instrumental glory, can be heard in a most special concert with Téada and Crasdant. Irish traditional band Téada play alongside Welsh band Crasdant, who combine the sounds of flute, fiddle, accordion, guitar with traditional harp of Wales, the unique triple harp and Welsh reed instrument - the pibgorn. Crasdant comprise four of Wales' most outstanding musicians, Robin Huw Bowen, Stephen Rees, Andy McLaughlin and Huw Williams, all with highly credited individual careers, who came together six years ago to place Welsh music in its rightful illustrious place alongside its better known Celtic cousins. Crasdant bring to centre stage the indigenous Welsh harp, the triple harp, played by its leading exponent, Robin Huw Bowen, who is also a BAFTA award winning composer for his music for the film Eldra. The melodies are carried by the fiddle and flutes of Stephen Rees, and Andy McLauchlin, who combine on certain tunes, to play the pibgorn - an ancient Welsh reed instrument. Underpinning and interweaving with the harp is the deft guitar accompaniment of Huw Williams. On certain tunes the musical fireworks are added to by the brilliance of Huw Williams's step-dancing in traditional Welsh clogs. Crasdant have already made many converts to their distinctive traditional sounds through their concert and festival appearances in North America and throughout the United Kingdom. Téada are Oisin Mac Diarmada on Fiddle, Paul Finn on Button Accordion, Damien Stenson on Flute, Sean McElwain on Guitar & Bouzouki, and Tristan Rosenstock on Bodhran. In just four short years, Téada has exploded onto the international touring circuit, capturing the imagination of many with a creative and spontaneous musical approach, seeking to capture the intricacies of traditional art form within a contemporary band context. Frequent headline performances at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Australia in addition to an ambitious touring schedule incorporating performing arts centres, theatres and clubs, has seen the band evolve into the busiest Irish touring act worldwide with a reputation for a knock-out live shows. The release of Téada’s second album worldwide in 2004 by US label, Green Linnet, saw the band being recently nominated in the prestigious “Best Traditional Album” award category by Irish Music Magazine. The remainder of 2005 will see prominent touring activity throughout the US, Canada, the UK, Denmark and France along with a larger-scale Irish Christmas in America show production hitting the US at year-end. To coincide with the tour Crasdant will be releasing their 3rd album on Wales’ premier label, SAIN. The album ‘Dwndwr / The Great Noise’ will also include a DVD containing 3 tracks from the album in surround sound format along with a video of the track ‘Pibddawns Trefynwy / Monmouth Hornpipe’ with Huw Williams (the Crasdant member responsible for the guitar playing and good humour!) clog dancing to the accompaniment of the band. This innovative new album confirms and enhances Crasdant’s status as the leading instrumental bands to come out of Wales in decades. Crasdant & Téada concert-goers can expect a thoroughly entertaining evening where superb music is lifted to another plane through the artistry of the musicians involved and their unique humour. Band Member Bios CRASDANT Robin Huw Bowen:- Triple harp Stephen Rees:- Fiddle, Accordion, Whistles, Pibgorn Andy McLaughlin :- Flute, Whistles, Pibgorn Huw Williams:- Guitar, step-dancing Huw Williams has an impressive track record of conducting workshops in step-dance/clogging and, for an entirely different direction, song-writing. Robin Huw Bowen has produced several books of tunes, having engaged in first hand research at the National Library of Wales. Coupled to this research is the opportunity to hear the indigenous harp of Wales, the triple harp, played by the world's leading exponent. Stephen Rees, a lecturer in music at the University of Wales, Bangor, has been playing the traditional music of Wales since a teenager whilst adding to its store by way of his many noteworthy compositions. Andy McLauchlin, the group's token Englishman (!), is a leading exponent of the flute in traditional music and a fine player of the pibgorn. Touring performances have seen Sean gaining growing accolades for his accompaniment and melodic skills. Having recently completed his Masters in Electronic Commerce, he currently plays music full time while still finding time to design and develop websites for a number of leading musicians. From Glenageary in Co. Dublin, Tristan Rosenstock picked up the bodhrán at the age of 10 and his playing encompasses a distinctive musical sensitivity, evident on a number of recordings and tours with which he has been involved.Prominent in Dublin musical circles, Tristan has recently completed his studies in Irish and Old Irish at Trinity College, Dublin, and now performs on a full-time basis with téada. The youngest of five children who all played music, she was immersed in traditional music and song at a very early age. The tin whistle was her first instrument and before she reached the age of ten she was proficient in the techniques and styles associated with it. She was already winning All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and Slogadh titles and continued to do so with Flute and Uilleann Pipes added to the list. Although Emer went on to add Fiddle to her range of instruments, the flute has become her main instrument. Her love for it has led her to bring it to centre stage at her concerts and on her recordings. Emer moved to Dublin when she was seventeen and became involved in the session and concert scene in the city. Through this she was introduced to the music of a vast number of musicians who, like Emer, were eager to perform, compose and record. With the release of her debut album"Merry Bits of Timber" in 1996, Emer's playing and musical compositions grabbed the attention of those who had not up until then heard her. The ablum was critically acclaimed and Emer began to perform on the concert circuit in Ireland and beyond. Very soon she was performing with the likes of Paddy Glackin, Michael Ó Domhnaill, Donal Lunny, Flook and Breton flautist Jean-Michel Veillon. Emer has performed and written music for a number of theatre shows including "Farawayan" by Donal O' Kelly, The Ark's production of "The Stolen Child", "Na Pratai Lofa" by Rubato Ballet Company and has recently been asked to contribute music to a documentary tracking the development of Peter Gabriel's charity organisation Witness. Emer has been playing Uilleann Pipes and Flute with the highly successful band Afro Celt Sound System since 1999. She has toured with the band worldwide, played on their Grammy-nominated record Volume 3: Further in time and has just finished recording with the band for their forthcoming release. While taking a break from the road in 2000, Emer recorded her second album "Playground". She chose to record it in the village of Ross West in Mayo where she had grown up. Some tracks were completed in New York and Dublin. On "Playground" Emer played Flutes, Whistles, Uilleann Pipes, Fiddle and Cello. She composed thirteen pieces of music for the album, which also includes traditional tunes and newly composed music from Ireland, Brittany and the US. "Playground" was released in 2001 on Emer's own record label Is Mise. Like her debut it received rave reviews and put Emer in touch with a wider audience. She has recently worked with Greek singer Eleftheria Arvanitaki and French record producer Hughes de Courson. Emer continues to tour with the Afro Celts as well as with her own band. She is at present working on music for her third album. *** 8 *** MARIA MCGARRY 8pm Friday 21st of October €15 / €12 Awarded the coveted Artist Diploma in Performance from the Juilliard School in 2003, Maria continues to astound audiences across the globe with intuitive musicianship, depth of interpretation and a uniquely personal style. “…impeccable… a model of how to let music speak for itself.” The Irish Times CONCERT PROGRAMME R.
